Signs Your Ductwork Is Leaking or Damaged

Your ductwork may be leaking or damaged if some rooms stay warmer than others, airflow from certain vents feels weak, dust builds up fast, you hear whistling in the walls or ceiling, or your power bill rises with no change in how you use the AC. Ducts are easy to forget because they hide in the attic, walls, and ceilings. Yet they carry every bit of cool air your AC makes. When they leak, that air goes to waste, and the AC works harder to make up for it. Here is what each sign means and what you can check on your own.

Why Is One Room Always Hotter?

A room that stays hot while the rest of the house cools often has a duct problem. The run to that room may be disconnected, crushed, kinked, or too small. It may also be very long, so the air warms up before it gets there. First, make sure the vent is open and not blocked by furniture. If it is clear and the airflow still feels weak, the duct is the likely cause.

Can Leaky Ducts Raise Your Power Bill?

Yes, leaky ducts can raise your bill because your AC runs longer to make up for lost air. Supply leaks push cool air into the attic, often the hottest space in the home. Return leaks pull hot attic air back into the system, so the AC has to cool it all over again. Either way, the system works harder. The house still feels warm.

Why Is My House So Dusty?

Extra dust can come from leaks on the return side of the ducts. A return leak pulls in air from the attic or wall cavities, along with the dust and insulation fibers in those spaces. That dust then blows out through your vents. If you clean and the dust comes right back, look at the filter first. If it fills up fast, return leaks may be part of the reason.

What Does Damaged Flex Duct Look Like?

Damaged flex duct is often easy to spot in the attic. Look for runs that sag between supports, kink around beams, or lie flat where someone stepped on them. Check for torn outer jackets, loose ends at the fittings, and gaps where old tape let go. Stay on the framing and be careful up there. The attic is hot, and the ceiling below will not hold your weight.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Ducts?

Repair your ducts when the damage is in a few spots, and replace them when it is everywhere. A disconnected run, a torn section, or a leaky joint can be fixed and sealed. Ducts that are brittle and cracking along their length, or a system that was too small from the start, usually call for replacement. If you are also planning a new AC, look at the ducts at the same time. Our post on what affects the cost of a new AC explains why.
